Wern Vets Farming Enterprise

Wernvets’ farming enterprise consists of two units:

A small intensive biosecure unit in Ruthin where cattle and sheep embryo transfer and ram semen freezing operations are carried out. In addition all our lambs are born on this unit in a tight lambing period in late march.

A larger biosecure unit on Anglesey where our cattle graze from April to October and our sheep graze all year round other than during lambing.

Why Did We Start Farming?

Although many of the vets and staff at Wernvets are farmer’s sons, daughters, wives and many have worked in farming related industries before joining us, we felt that only through running a farming business ourselves with its day to day challenges would we fully appreciate the pressures our farming clients were under and be able to keep abrest of current agricultural issues.

Advanced Breeding Techniques

Our extensive involvement in advanced breeding techniques of farm animals has drawn us into keeping our own stock to complement the services we offer, such as selling embryo recipients, bulls and teasers of known health status to clients.

Improving The Profitability of Livestock Enterprises

In the course of our day to day work on farms, we offer advise about controlling diseases and improving the profitability of livestock enterprises.

Much of this advice involves, not the sale of medicines or vaccines, but making changes to the management of the units.

Such management changes might involve advancing the breeding season and improving the synchrony of ewes by the use of our teasers, or using an easy calving Swedish Red bull on dairy heifers to avoid difficult first calvings that can have a lifelong deleterious effect on the animal’s breeding efficiency. In this way we are able to pump prime some of the management changes we advise.
